Atlas Mountains Trekking Guide: Toubkal and Beyond

The High Atlas Mountains, just an hour from Marrakech, offer some of Morocco's most rewarding trekking, from gentle day hikes to summiting Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak at 4,167 meters.

Day Hikes from Imlil

The village of Imlil is the trailhead for most Atlas treks, offering half-day and full-day hikes through Berber villages, walnut groves, and mountain streams, suitable for all fitness levels.

Climbing Mount Toubkal

Reaching Toubkal's summit typically takes two days: hiking to the Toubkal Refuge on day one, then a pre-dawn summit push on day two. No technical climbing skills are needed in summer, but a guide is essential.

Best Season for Trekking

April to October is ideal for Toubkal without snow gear; winter ascents are possible but require crampons, ice axes, and mountaineering experience.

Berber Village Life

Treks pass through traditional Berber villages where mint tea hospitality and mule-based transport are still part of daily life, offering genuine cultural insight beyond the tourist trail.

What to Pack

Sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing, sun protection, and a warm sleeping layer for refuge nights, which can be cold even in summer.

Combining with a Desert Tour

Many travelers combine a day or two of Atlas trekking with a multi-day Sahara Desert tour, since both routes depart from Marrakech.
