Marrakech Travel Guide: Top Things to Do

Marrakech is Morocco's most visited city, and for good reason: it blends a UNESCO-listed medina, world-class gardens, and easy access to the Atlas Mountains and Sahara Desert.

Jemaa el-Fnaa Square

The main square comes alive every evening with food stalls, storytellers, and musicians. Visit at sunset for the best atmosphere, and return for dinner at one of the rooftop terraces overlooking the square.

The Medina Souks

Marrakech's souks are a maze of narrow alleys selling leather goods, spices, lanterns, and carpets. Bargaining is expected — start at roughly half the initial price and negotiate from there.

Majorelle Garden and Yves Saint Laurent Museum

This cobalt-blue garden, once owned by Yves Saint Laurent, is one of Marrakech's most photographed spots. Arrive early to avoid queues, especially in high season.

Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs

Both sites showcase intricate Moroccan architecture with carved cedar wood, zellige tilework, and peaceful courtyards, offering a quieter contrast to the souks.

Day Trips from Marrakech

Marrakech is the launch point for some of Morocco's best day trips: the Ourika Valley and Atlas Mountains, the Ouzoud Waterfalls, Essaouira's Atlantic coast, and Ouarzazate's kasbahs and film studios.

Where to Stay

Choose a riad inside the medina for an authentic experience with rooftop views, or a hotel in Gueliz for a more modern base with easier access by car.
