Fes vs Marrakech: Which City Should You Visit First?

Fes and Marrakech are Morocco's two most iconic imperial cities, and travelers with limited time often have to choose between them, or decide which to visit first.

Atmosphere

Marrakech feels more energetic and tourist-oriented, with a lively main square and modern district (Gueliz) alongside the old medina. Fes feels older and more authentic, with the largest car-free urban area in the world inside its ancient walls.

Sightseeing

Marrakech offers gardens, palaces, and easy access to the Atlas Mountains and Sahara. Fes is famous for its tanneries, madrasas, and one of the world's oldest universities, Al Quaraouiyine.

Shopping

Both cities have incredible souks, but Fes is considered the artisanal heart of Morocco, particularly for leather, ceramics, and traditional crafts.

Logistics

Marrakech has more international flight connections and is the better base for desert tours via Merzouga's southern route. Fes connects well to Chefchaouen and northern Morocco, and to Merzouga via a different desert route.

Our Recommendation

If you only have time for one, Marrakech is the easier first-timer's choice thanks to flight access and tour infrastructure. If you have 7+ days, visiting both — connected via a multi-day desert tour — gives the fullest picture of Morocco.
